President’s Message

Dear Colleagues and friends,

Once again it is my pleasure to address you and to share my thoughts with you on current issues that reflect the challenges Malta is facing and which we feel which the Council, through its initiatives can help shape a positive way forward.

During the last six months of the Spanish Presidency, our Council has been very busy addressing the situation of women in employment and in decision-making. Of equal importance in our work have been proposals on the sharing of home and work responsibilities by both parents. We have been following very closely developments in the directive on the extension of maternity leave and parallel with it the directive on maternity leave for self-employed workers and assisting spouses

Now that the consultation process on pensions reform has been initiated, NCW is preparing its proposals and recommendations not only by evaluating current policies and their effectiveness, but also in a more comprehensive manner by studying the impact of national employment polices, the demographic deficit and Malta’s targets and obligations of the EU 2020 strategy that has recently come into force

I feel I must express my appreciation for the ongoing activities of our various committees and the training courses held regularly at our Centre at Blata l-Bajda. Our gratitude to the affiliated organisations for their proposals and their contributions to the debates on topics we are dealing with. Our contacts with our counterparts in Europe and internationally are becoming stronger and more active; o are our contacts with the Commonwealth Foundation

As Summer draws near, we need to gear up for the August pre-budget 2011 consultation - never a moment’s rest, it seems! Finally as always, I urge you to keep in touch, to let us know your views, ideas and proposals and those of your friends so that what decision we take will truly reflect the needs of our society

Have an enjoyable summer!

Grace Attard
