Mothers’ Day is every day
In reply to Malta’s position regarding the extension of maternity leave as proposed by the Commission, recently published in a local newspaper, the following is NCW’s position. NCW supports the Commission's proposal for a new directive to improve the protection offered to pregnant workers and workers who have recently given birth and/or are breastfeeding.

Empowerment of women is a topic which continues to be high on the EU's global agenda.
EU Launches Campaign to Tackle Gender Pay Gap
The European Commission has today launched an EU-wide campaign to help tackle the gender pay gap. Across the EU economy, women earn on average 17.4% less than men. The simple concept of 'equal pay for work of equal value' is at the heart of the campaign being launched in the context of International Women's Day on 8 March to raise awareness of the pay gap, its causes, and how to tackle it.

 The National Council of Women of Malta was founded in 1964. It is a non-governmental organization comprising individual members and national organizations. It is non-partisan, non-sectarian and independent. It is a co-ordinating body that aims to present a broad and comprehensive view of women's opinions on matters of public interest. It aims to improve the quality of life for all. In particular it works to promote equality of opportunity for women and enable them to participate effectively at all levels and in all aspects of the life of the community.

 The National Council of Women provides a forum for women of different backgrounds and experiences to come together as individuals and as representatives of affiliated organizations, to exchange information and ideas, formulate policy, educate and promote change.

  Closing the gender gap-sharing responsibilities   The debate on gender inequality is still quite visible on the local media in one way or another. In spite of the existing legislation which prohibits gender discrimination, statistics demonstrate that women remain lower paid than men, are under-represented politically, in the workforce and as entrepreneurs.Better balance between work and private life has been approved by the European Council (2006) who also approved The European Pact for Gender equality. However improvements in legislation relating to pregnant workers and the granting of maternity and parental leave to reconcile professional, private and family life need to be addressed more effectively as highlighted in the European Commission message for World Women’s Day 2009 with the theme ‘Closing the Pay Gap’.. . Basic English Skills
NCW is organising the courses in conjunction with the Adult Education Division. The English Course is for all those that would like to improve their spoken English and the formation of sentences.  It is ideal for those that have left school at primary or form 1 and 2 and also for those that do not have a certificate in English. 
The summer course starts on Tuesday 14th July from 9.00 till 12.30 every Tuesday once a week during the morning at the National Council of Women Centre Blata l-Bajda between to St. Joseph School and Maria Regina.  The atmosphere is very informal, we learn together. The course ends on 15th September with a short break in August.  The course is for duration of 9 sessions.
Children may accompany the adults as at NCW we have a play area.
For those that have reached the 4th 5th and 6th year of primary and the 1st and 2nd of secondary, we have other arrangements.

Grace Attard to represent Civil Society on MEUSAC Core Group

Following recent elections for representation of Civil Society on MEUSAC Core group, it has been decided that Grace Attard will fill in this post for one year from April 2009 to April 2010.
Grace Attard was nominated by the National Council of Women of Malta, of which she has been elected President for a second term, having previously served in the same post for the period between 1999-2004.

She is a member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC – Group III)
focusing on external relations, social affairs and the internal market . Within the EESC she has also been involved in studies on immigration and asylum policies; working groups and discussions on factors facilitating access by women to economic and social life, the Euromed process, work-life balance and women in industry and intercultural dialogue among others. She has also been rapporteur of opinions related to gender equality

She is a member or on various Boards and Committees including
the General Interest Group within MEUSAC prior to EU accession;
the MCESD’s Civil Society Committee;
the Civil Society Forum
the Commission for the Promotion of Equality for Men and Women (NCPE);
the National Commission for the Monitoring Committee of the Single Programming Document – Structural Funds Intervention;
The National Information Society Advisory Council,
She has been appointed member of the Voluntary Organisations Council and is also sitting on a number of MEUSAC Sectoral Committees

Ms. Attard has specialised in career guidance and studied other areas for training
including Personal and Social Development, media education, community substance abuse prevention services and parental skill courses. She is a teacher by profession where she has worked at secondary level in English, History and Media Education. She has been editor of the newsletter of the International Council of Women and regularly contributes to local newspapers on various issues
