FITA ICT Courses Overview (2009-2010)

FITA (Foundation for Information Technology Accessibility) recently concluded its latest ICT training course sessions. These spanned between October 2009 and June 2010 and were held at the Maltese College for Arts Science and Technology (MCAST) ICT Institute in Paola, the Lifelong Learning Centre in Msida and at Dar L-Arka in Gozo.

Starting this year, FITA introduced a Basic Computer Course for residents of Gozo. More courses are planned to be held in Gozo depending on users’ interest and the availability of resources.

The certificate presentation ceremony for the course held in Gozo, took place on 4th June 2010 at Dar L-Arka while that in Malta took place on 5th July 2010 at the Istituto Vincenzo Bugeja in Hamrun.

FITA’s courses between the end of 2009 and mid-2010, were structured into two sessions. The first one, which was held between October 2009 and February 2010, involved four courses. The second session took place between February and June 2010 and included five courses.

These FITA courses cater for persons with intellectual and/or communication difficulties. In 2009/2010 the courses held during each session catered for four levels and typically consist of twelve (12) weekly lessons of two hours each.. FITA also provides one-to-one courses for persons with a visual impairment.

Courses held in 2009/10 are listed below:

1) Sesson 1 - October 2009 to February 2010

a) Basic Computer Awareness

b) ECDL Module 2 Awareness (For students covering ECDL at school, and needing additional support)

c) ECDL Module 2 Introduction (Full coverage of ECDL Module but not aimed at examination)

d) ECDL Module 2 (Full coverage of ECDL Module aimed at examination/certification)

2)

Session 2 - February to May 2010

a) MyWeb

b) Basic Computer Awareness (Similar to MyWeb and held in Gozo)

c) ECDL Module 3 Awareness (For students covering ECDL at school, and needing additional support)

d) ECDL Module 3 Introduction (Full coverage of ECDL Module but not aimed at examination)

e) ECDL Module 3 (MSWord)(Full coverage of ECDL Module aimed at examination/certification)

A total of 63 students attended these courses, and 58 certificates of attendance were awarded.

Students who progressed well in Session A moved on to attend more advanced training in Session B.

12% of the students attempted the relevant ECDL examination and some of them, passed with full marks.

These achievements would not have been possible without the dedication and constant effort put in by both the students and the tutors.

In the past years FITA and the Computer Society of Malta (CSM) worked together with dedicated officials from the Directorate for Educational Services in order to establish clear guidelines to ensure that ECDL examinations are accessible to all . This was achieved without compromising the high level of professionalism applied to ECDL certificates.
